Mekong Biochar Initiative , ESG Education & Business at the International Exhibition: Promoting the Biochar Ecosystem and Carbon Credits in Vietnam

At the recent international exhibition on industry, environmental technology, and sustainable development in Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Biochar Initiative, ESG Education & Business introduced to the business community, investors, development organizations, and technology partners a comprehensive solution for Biochar Production & Carbon Credit Development – one of the areas considered to have the greatest potential in Vietnam’s Net Zero journey.

The event attracted considerable interest from visitors, particularly businesses in the fields of agriculture, food processing, industrial manufacturing, biomass energy, and the circular economy.

From Biomass to Carbon Assets

At the exhibition, ESG Education & Business presented a comprehensive model of the biochar value chain and carbon credits, showing how agricultural by-products such as:

  • Rice husk
  • Coconut shell
  • Sawdust
  • Sugarcane bagasse
  • Wood by-products
  • Agricultural waste

It can be converted into biochar through gasification and pyrolysis technologies.

Unlike traditional incineration or disposal methods, biochar technology allows carbon to be locked in a stable state for hundreds to thousands of years, while simultaneously creating products with valuable uses in agriculture, soil improvement, environmental remediation, and the development of biocarbon credits.

Through the technical diagrams presented at the booth, visitors had the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the entire value chain from:

Biomass → Biochar → Carbon Removal → Carbon Credits → Carbon Market

This is considered one of the most complete circular economy models currently available, where waste is transformed into environmental assets with real economic value.

Introducing the Biochar Technology Ecosystem

One of the most talked-about aspects of the exhibition was the technology solutions developed by ESG Education & Business and its international partners.

The systems introduced include:

  • Batch Pyrolysis Technology
  • Continuous Pyrolysis Technology
  • Biomass Gasification Technology
  • Material pre-processing system
  • Operational monitoring and management system
  • MRV (Measurement, Reporting & Verification) system for carbon credits

These solutions are designed to scale flexibly from households and agricultural cooperatives to large industrial plants.

In particular, Mekong Biochar Initiative and ESG Education & Business also shared practical experiences from biochar projects currently being implemented in Vietnam, including projects converting rice husks, agricultural by-products, and biomass into biochar for soil improvement and carbon credit development.

International Carbon Credit Connection

Besides production technology, one topic that receives many questions from businesses is the potential for commercializing carbon credits from biochar.

The Mekong Biochar Initiative and ESG Education & Business team introduced the project development process according to international standards, including:

  • Carbon project design
  • Building an MRV system
  • Biochar quality assessment
  • Biochar certification according to international standards.
  • Register for carbon credits
  • Connecting the global carbon market

Visitors were particularly interested in the Carbon Removal Credits model, in which biochar is considered one of the most stable carbon removal solutions currently available due to its ability to retain carbon in the soil for extended periods.

This opens up opportunities to generate new revenue streams for businesses and future regenerative agriculture projects.

Introducing the Mekong Biochar Initiative Network

Another important highlight at the exhibition was the introduction of the Mekong Biochar Initiative (MBI) – a regional initiative developed by ESG Education & Business to promote the biochar ecosystem in the Mekong Subregion.

The initiative aims to:

  • Connecting farmers to the carbon market.
  • Supporting businesses in developing the biochar value chain.
  • Promoting regenerative agriculture projects
  • Building a digital MRV system.
  • Attracting investment for carbon removal projects.

Through MBI, ESG Education & Business expects Vietnam to become a Biochar Carbon Credit development hub in Southeast Asia in the coming years.

From Idea to Actual Factory

One of the key messages emphasized throughout the exhibition is:

“We’re not just talking about biochar. We’re building real biochar projects.”

Visitors were shown images and information about:

  • The pyrolysis systems have been completed.
  • Biochar plant projects using rice husks
  • International technology partners
  • Investment cooperation models
  • Carbon credit projects are under development.

This helps businesses gain a clearer understanding of practical implementation possibilities instead of just focusing on theoretical research. ESG Education & Business is also currently collaborating with international partners to deploy advanced biochar systems to serve the goals of the circular economy and biocarbon credits in Vietnam.

The exhibition has closed, a new journey has begun.

After days of work and discussions with hundreds of visitors, investors, and businesses, one positive sign has become very clear:

Biochar is no longer an unfamiliar concept.

Vietnamese businesses are beginning to see biochar not only as an environmental solution, but also as a new business opportunity, linked to:

  • ESG
  • Net Zero
  • Circular economy
  • Regenerative agriculture
  • Carbon credits
  • Biomass waste management

ESG Education & Business will continue to partner with businesses, localities, and investors to realize large-scale biochar projects, contributing to transforming agricultural by-products into valuable carbon assets and making Vietnam one of the leading biochar development centers in the Mekong region.

The exhibition has ended, but the opportunities for collaboration, investment, and innovation in the Biochar and Carbon Credits sector are only just beginning.
